On my way home Saturday after finishing my day job I decided to check out a gift trade fair. I’ve never been to something like this before but after seeing on Facebook a friend @leanne_white_art was having a stall there I thought it might be interesting. There were so many stalls! I bought a couple of lovely things and made some great contacts which I hope to follow up soon. Unfortunately my friends stall was at another venue but as this event is on for a week I hope to check it out later. It was really fun to slip into the role of “Professional” which I often don’t experience as a freelancer. I also learned that most stalls have a minimum spend as they are generally catering to shop fronts. The places I did buy from luckily were able to sell from the floor, so I bought myself a selection of butterflies and a pair of dragonflies from @bitsandbugs and a lovely moonstone ring and boulder opal pendant from a jewellers whose name escapes me right now. Overall it was a great experience and I came home invigorated 😊 #reedtradefair #artistlife #belindaillustrates #august2018

Final drawing for the Ainu people of Japan 🇯🇵. If you were wondering about the strange mouth, traditionally the Ainu women tattooed around their mouths, it was a sign of a woman’s readiness for marriage (it would start with a small dot which was added to each year) it was frowned on and outlawed by feudal Japan but they continued the practice right up to the early 20th Century. @blueangelpublishing #oraclecard #ainu #bear #liptattoo

Card 23 drawing in progress featuring an Ainu woman of Japan. Traditionally Ainu women had lip tattoos that began when they were children up until (and sometimes after) they married. It isn’t fully clear why they did this particular tattoo though it is believed they were to repel evil spirits from entering the body (mouth) and causing sickness or misfortune, also the lip tattoos indicated that a woman had reached maturity and was ready for marriage. And finally, lip tattoos assured the woman life after death in the place of her deceased ancestors. It’s a really interesting culture.

Drawing for Card 33 for the Ancient Spirit Oracle card deck written by Jade Sky and to be published by Blue Angel Publishing. This card is representing the Sami people of Sweden and is called Animal Spirit Guides. Once I finished this drawing I found myself constantly staring at it, it really gives me a sense of peace, I hope it does the same for you ❤️ #oraclecards #animalspirit #reindeer #sami #belindaillustrates #australianartist #pencildrawing #prismacolor #colerase #illustratorsoninstagram #july2018

Really enjoying this technique of finding the negative spaces in the tree limbs with @danielsmithartistsmaterials watercolour ground, a technique I actually first tried nearly 20 years ago as a fine arts student and was reminded of by @spmlaw who is masterful in this technique, I highly recommend checking her art out.
I’m looking forward to building up the values and adding more local colour to this painting.

At the Melbourne #rarebookweek and I’m loving it! So may beautiful pieces! Amongst my favourites is this original watercolour by Ida Rentoul Outhwaite. It’s so good to see in person! Another favourite is the Chaucer book by Kelmscott Press. Thanks @rovinacai for reminding me of this event 😁♥

So after a bit of research (a lot of the suggested plants were actually introduced to the UK after the 10th Century) I chose Artemisia Vulgaris otherwise known as Mugwort. If you slide to the right you can see some of the reference photos I used for this unassuming plant.

“Artemisia vulgaris (common mugwort[2] or common wormwood) is one of several species in the genus Artemisia commonly known as mugwort, although Artemisia vulgaris is the species most often called mugwort. This species is also occasionally known as riverside wormwood,[3] felon herb, chrysanthemum weed, wild wormwood, old Uncle Henry, sailor’s tobacco, naughty man, old man or St. John’s plant (not to be confused with St John’s wort).[4] Mugworts have been used medicinally and as culinary herbs….In the European Middle Ages, mugwort was used as a magical protective herb. Mugwort was used to repel insects, especially moths, from gardens. Mugwort has also been used from ancient times as a remedy against fatigue and to protect travelers against evil spirits and wild animals. Roman soldiers put mugwort in their sandals to protect their feet against fatigue.[13] Mugwort is one of the nine herbs invoked in the pagan Anglo-Saxon Nine Herbs Charm, recorded in the 10th century in the Lacnunga.” Wikipedia

Sometimes it’s good to check if a painting is reading well by looking at it in greyscale (swipe to see it in colour). I’m pretty much done with this card just a couple of tweaks and adjustments in Photoshop and then I can move on to the next card 😁

2 weeks ago I started to paint the image on the left only to discover that I had chosen the wrong paper 😣 I meant to use Fabriano Artistico not Arches - woops! Once I got back from my trip I bought the right paper and reprinted the drawing which turned out much clearer 😁 so fingers crossed I’m back on track.

Because it’s my birthday this month I’m having a sale on all original paintings listed on my Etsy page 25% off! Go to the link in my bio to see what’s on offer. In the meantime here’s a fairy I painted for the Changelings Artist Collective (@changelingartist) that is in the sale 😁
